We were able to get both cases transferred to the Miami drug court. Guillermo completed all the drug court requirements and the charges against him were dismissed.
Guillermo was only 21 years old and looking at the possibility of spending most of his youth in prison.
Guillermo R. was caught opening up cars that were left unlocked in Tamarac, Florida. He was high at the time. He stole a bag, laptop, tablet, and cash from one of the unlocked vehicles and was arrested. The cops smelled weed, and conducted a search of his vehicle and found 161 grams of marijuana, along with small baggies typically used for distributing marijuana. The charges against him were car burglary, grand theft, and possession of both THC and cannabis. He was looking at up to 20 years in prison if convicted. To make things worse, while out on bond, Guillermo got caught with weed again and was arrested in Miami.
We knew Guillermo was more in need of treatment than punishment, so we fought hard to get him into drug court. Originally the prosecutors in Broward did not want to let him into drug court, so we had to work hard to get him in.
