We were able to get Mike’s case dismissed with the completion of an alternative program.
Mike has never been arrested, and was scared of going to jail. Mike also owns his own company, and did not want to ruin his professional reputation.
Mike S. was parked on the side of a building in Oakland Park when a cop pulled up behind him and approached Mike’s vehicle. Mike told the cops that he was at a sporting event in which he had a few beers, and had pulled over to read and wait until he was sober enough to drive. Mike got out of the vehicle to talk to the officer, and consented to completing the standard field sobriety exercises. Before starting the exercises, Mike alerted the officer that he has a hurt knee and hand. Mike then completed the horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk and turn, one leg stand, and finger to nose, in which he told the officer that he could not complete the last exercise because of his hand. The officer then arrested Mike for Driving Under the Influence.
Because Mike is a Veteran, we were able to get him into Veteran’s Court. While completing the program, Mike helped to mentor younger veterans. Being 50 years old, Mike wanted to help others get their lives on the right track. We used this, and his engagement in the program, to allow him to complete it in only one year.
