The Broward Sheriff’s Office took over law enforcement in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in 2001. BSO is led by Sheriff Gregory Tony, who was sworn in January of 2019.
BSO’s Lauderdale-by-the-Sea district Captain Thomas Palmer directs a staff of nearly 30 law enforcement employees. This includes 19 sworn police deputies, three sergeants and Executive Lieutenant Bill Wesolowski. The Lauderdale-by-the-Sea district offers a C.O.P. (Citizen Observer Patrol) program in which local residents volunteer to help BSO prevent crime. Volunteers conduct patrol activities, check on unoccupied residences and elderly/home bound residents upon request, and report potential issues and neighborhood hazards to BSO.

Outside of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the Broward Sheriff’s Office also handles incidents and offers support to the Dania Beach district.
Sheriff Gregory Tony oversees BSO. The Sheriff’s Office has 16 districts. BSO’s services include a Child Protective Investigations Section, a Civil Division and a Department of Law Enforcement. In addition to road patrol and other operations, special BSO units include a Bomb Squad, a K-9 (canine) unit, School resource deputy unit and more. Community programs including drug court, in-custody behavioral services, probation division, employment services programs, and more.

Broward Sheriff’s Office DUI Unit
BSO handles the issue of Driving Under the Influence with the DUI Unit, which incorporates the DUI Task Force, DUI/Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT), and BAT Video. The DUI Task Force works to identify and apprehend impaired drivers and boaters, as well as assisting other law enforcement agencies and promotes support groups including Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD). BAT centers use the Intoxilyzer 8000 to test for evidence of alcohol and provide technical support during the processing of arrestees, while BAT Video staff collect video footage of offenders and teaches Florida prosecutors on issues regarding forensic breath alcohol testing.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Courts are part of the 17th Judicial Circuit, which encompasses all of Broward County. Any cases that are appealed are handled in the 4th District Courts of Appeal in West Palm Beach.
